GET TO KNOW THE TYPES OF DRUG AND ALCOHOL DETOX – DON’T FLY BLIND.
There are several basic types of detox treatments, and there are several variations on each type. Here are some of the basics.
HOME DETOX
Home detox is the most basic way to go through the withdrawal process. It’s an attempt to “go it alone” with no medical supervision. The main problem is the high failure rate. Almost no one can get through severe withdrawal symptoms on their own, so they quit and return to drugs or alcohol. Also, home detox means quitting “cold turkey,” – which can be unsafe or even life-threatening. Everyone has to get through the withdrawal symptoms, and home detox is the most challenging way to do it.
OUTPATIENT DETOX
Outpatient detox is like home detox, except a medical person is “on-call” if things go wrong while you detox at home or a hotel room somewhere. Unfortunately, withdrawing from drugs or alcohol can generate sudden, debilitating physical, emotional or behavioural events. The patient can’t even get to the telephone; never mind think straight.
INPATIENT DETOX
Medical detox is the safest and most effective approach. During inpatient detox, the patient lives in the center where they receive appropriate care to help them go through the withdrawal safely. Nurses and doctors are present to deliver medical help as needed. Patients will be given medications for a short period, which will help them go through the withdrawal with minimal pain and discomfort. Not all inpatient detox centers are Medical Detox; some are brief or social detox. They usually don’t have medical personnel; they have staff who do their very best to support patients without the help of medications or medical support.
RAPID DETOX
Rapid detox treatment is a hazardous treatment only used for opiate addiction. Patients are placed under general anesthesia for at least six hours and injected with massive amounts of drugs that force an opiate withdrawal. The body goes through the terrible stress of detoxing from opiates too fast. Many patients have suffered after-effects for months, and a significant number have died during the process. Numerous studies have concluded that rapid detox has more risks than benefits and that it is no more effective than other types of detox and costs a lot more.
